چکیده
The presence of pharmaceutical compounds in the whole environment is a growing concern. These might be present effluents wastewater treatment plants and, hence, irrigation with treated sewage may source groundwater pollution. volcanic aquifer that lies NE Gran Canaria (Spain) was studied to address relationship occurrence and golf course has been irrigated regenerated water since 1973. Of 14 analyzed samples, five wells were chosen perform annual monitoring. Irrigation soil leachate also evaluated. target analytes atenolol, metamizole, fluoxetine, ibuprofen, nicotine, permethrin, caffeine, their metabolite paraxanthine. environmental risk limited as concentrations pharmaceuticals measured sampled always below 60 ng·L?1 (lower than detected caffeine nicotine concentrations). Wide variations for same among sampling campaigns, different wells. study points importance sample conservation during transport need analyses immediately, or follow an in-situ extraction procedure carry concentrated samples under better conditions.

This study presents the evaluation of seven pharmaceutical compounds belonging to different commonly used therapeutic classes in seawater samples from coastal areas of Gran Canaria Island. The target compounds include atenolol (antihypertensive), acetaminophen (analgesic), norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin (antibiotics), carbamazepine (antiepileptic) and ketoprofen and diclofenac (anti-inflammatory...
متن کاملAn assessment of the concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater treatment plants on the island of Gran Canaria (Spain)
An assessment of the concentrations of thirteen different therapeutic pharmaceutical compounds was conducted on water samples obtained from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using solid phase extraction and high- and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (HPLC-MS/MS and UHPLC-MS/MS), was carried out. The target compounds included ketoprofen an...
متن کاملA long-term retrospective study on rehabilitation of seabirds in Gran Canaria Island, Spain (2003-2013)
AIMS The aims of this study were to analyze the causes of morbidity and mortality in a large population of seabirds admitted to the Tafira Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (TWRC) in Gran Canaria Island, Spain, from 2003 to 2013, and to analyze the outcomes of the rehabilitation process. METHODS We included 1,956 seabirds (133 dead on admission and 1,823 admitted alive) in this study. Causes of ...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Presence of Endocrine-Disrupting Compounds in Dissolved and Solid Wastewater Treatment Plant Samples of Gran Canaria Island (Spain)
Liquid and solid samples from two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) on Gran Canaria Island (Spain) have been tested for the presence of compounds with endocrine-disrupting properties. The selected degradation stages were sampled bimonthly from each WWTP over the 12-month period from July 2010 to July 2011. The analytical methods used for the determination of the endocrine-disrupting compounds...
متن کاملReconstructing Holocene vegetation on the island of Gran Canaria before and after human colonization
We provide the first fossil pollen and charcoal analysis from the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). The pollen record obtained from Laguna de Valleseco (870 m a.s.l.) spans the late Holocene (c. 4500–1500 cal. yr BP) and thereby captures the impact of human colonization. During the earliest period, pollen composition resembled contemporary thermophilous communities, with palms (Phoenix c...
